There is something nice about being down and out. George
Orwell spoke about it more eloquently in Down and Out in Paris and London than I can. However, I fully understand
what he was talking about. At a certain point you just throw your hands up and
say: whatever happens, happens. It’s a relief in a sense, once you know that it
is out of your hands. At that point you can just be…. Without the worry and stress
of achieving goals that society tells you that you need to achieve. Perhaps
there is something to simplicity that has been lost in current society; simplicity
is something that once existed but was lost in market values, stock options,
and profit margin (and industrialization). Why are people trying to keep up
with the Jones’s? People should enter their own race. I may be on the verge of homelessness
but I’m leading my race. My future is out of my hands and I’m perfectly ok with
that, it’s actually quite liberating. That is the race I’m running, absent the
rats. Run your own race, there is no reason to compete with Mr. and Mrs. Jones in a race that will never end.
